چکیده

We introduce a parametric model of other-regarding preferences. The income distribution, other status considerations, and the kindness or unkindness of others’ choices (“intentions”) systematically affect a person’s emotional state. The emotional state then determines the marginal rate of substitution between own and others’ payoffs, and thus the person’s subsequent choices. Model applications are illustrated with two sets of laboratory data: simple binary choice miniultimatum games and more complex choice moonlighting games. The results support the usefulness of modeling other-regarding preferences as being conditional on others’ intentions as well as the income distribution.

A Model of Reciprocal Fairness: Application to the Labour Contract

We investigate to what extent reciprocity, exhibited by employers and employees, lead to stable gift exchange practices in the labour contract, giving rise to noncompensating wage differentials among industries and firms. We use the concept of Sequential Reciprocity Equilibrium (Dufwenberg and Kirchsteiger 1998, 2004) to incorporate players’ preferences for reciprocity in their utility function...

Tacit Collusion under Fairness and Reciprocity

This paper departs from the standard profit-maximizing model of firm behavior by assuming that firms are motivated in part by personal animosity–or respect–towards their competitors. A reciprocal firm responds to unkind behavior of rivals with unkind actions (negative reciprocity), while at the same time, it responds to kind behavior of rivals with kind actions (positive reciprocity). We find t...
